Sister Denise Vrombaut, OSB, 87, dies; funeral Mass planned for March 5
ROCK ISLAND – A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, March 5, for Sister Denise Vrombaut, OSB, a member of the Sisters of St. Benedict of St. Mary Monastery for nearly 70 years. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the 9:30 a.m. liturgy is private, but will be livestreamed from the monastery chapel.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Rock Island and be limited to the Benedictine community, as well.
A private Christian wake service was planned for Thursday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m., also in the chapel of St. Mary Monastery.
Sister Denise died on March 3, 2021, at the Rock Island monastery. She was 87.
The daughter of Peter and Mary (DeRycke) Vrombaut, Donna Marie Vrombaut was born on Dec. 30, 1933, in Moline. She attended St. Mary School in Moline and graduated from Alleman High School in Rock Island.
Sister Denise entered the Benedictine community on Sept. 1, 1952, and professed her first vows on Aug. 23, 1954. Her final profession came on Aug. 23, 1957.
She served at St. Mary Monastery in food service, hospitality as guest coordinator, receptionist and transportation director.
Sister Denise was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John Vrombaut; and her sister, Anna Vrombaut Wilsey. She is survived by nieces and nephews, and her Benedictine Sisters.
