Spring Valley Catholic Consolidated School reunion is planned for Sept. 9
SPRING VALLEY — All students of the former Spring Valley Catholic Consolidated School are invited to a reunion planned for Saturday, Sept. 9, at Kirby Park.
The reunion will include a Mass set for noon at Immaculate Conception Church, 202 N. Greenwood St. The festivities will continue in the park from 2 to 8 p.m. and feature sandwiches from Verucchi’s, Bula’s Fresh Healthy Wraps, and Mexican food supplied by Jose and Marie Cruz. The Spring Valley Fire Department will sponsor a beer and wine garden, and music will be provided by a group of former classmates.
“Bring your family, friends, chairs, coolers, and a blanket if you’d like,” said Kathy McCann Matthews, one of four former students planning the reunion. The others are Marianna Hueneburg Haycraft, Carol Jesiolowski Maltas, and John Spoeri.
The school, which began at Immaculate Conception Parish, eventually was supported by four parishes in the community. The others, now merged into Nativity of Our Lord Parish, were Sts. Peter and Paul, St. Anne, and St. Anthony.
The Catholic Consolidated School closed in 1970.
Father Duane Leclercq, a senior priest of the diocese who attended the school, is expected to attend and offer a blessing.
Matthews said the committee is trying to establish contacts from every past class and “we’re about as far back as 1938,” but there are years with no contacts. She invited those who can help, or simply want more information, to contact her at (815) 529-7669 or rptgranny@hotmail.com.
There is no need to RSVP and no cost to attend the reunion.
