Danville Schlarman inducts two into its Hall of Fame
The Schlarman High School Hall of Fame will gain two new members this Saturday during halftime ceremonies at the Hilltoppers basketball game. Being honored are Edward Smith of Peoria, a member of the Class of 1951, and Sister Rose Marie Anglum, OSF, of Frankfort, a member of the Danville school’s inaugural Class of 1949.
The game, which pits the Hilltoppers against Judah Christian, will be played at 7 p.m. in Shebby Gymnasium.
While at Schlarman, Smith was active in sodality, dramatics, football and track. He continues to attend alumni events and support the Hilltopper athletic teams, and wrote the 50th anniversary book for the Class of 1951.
Now living in Peoria, he belongs to St. Mark’s Parish where he is secretary of the finance committee and chairs the parents committee. Smith also has been involved in the community as a Junior Achievement adviser, president and treasurer of the Peoria Chapter of the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, auditor of the United Way Fund Drive, and treasurer of an alumni board responsible for the financial management of a million dollar property on the Bradley University campus.
Smith retired after 42 years of service to Komatsu America and its predecessor, Westinghouse Air Brake Company (WABCO). Currently he is a part-time instructor of accounting at Illinois Central College.
Sister Rose Marie is not only a member of Schlarman’s first class, but is its first graduate by virtue of the alphabet placing her first in line to a receive diploma. She entered the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in 1955 and professed her perpetual vows in 1961.
Her ministry has included teaching for many years at elementary schools in Indiana, as well as missionary service as a teacher and retreat house manager in Brazil. Since 1996 she has assisted at the Franciscan motherhouse in Frankfort and at Sacred Heart Home in Avila, Ind.
The Schlarman High School Hall of Fame was founded in 1974. Members are chosen based on their accomplishments while at Schlarman, their achievements in their chosen profession, service or personal commitment to their community, and their support of Schlarman.
