Galesburg series invites young adults
GALESBURG — Catholic young adults in the Diocese of Peoria will get an opportunity to “tap into something more” when three Theology on Tap talks are presented at a Galesburg restaurant and bar next month.
The new series, offered free of charge and open to the public, will feature talks on the subjects of life as a Catholic religious, marriage, and Eastern Catholicism.
Scheduled for Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. with talks beginning at 7, the informal discussion series, sponsored by the diocesan Office of Evangelization, will be presented on Feb. 10, 17 and 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Cherry Street Restaurant and Bar, 57 S. Cherry St. Food and drink will be available for purchase.
This will be the third Theology on Tap series sponsored by the Diocese of Peoria within the past year. Last year an average of 75 people attended each night of a four-week series in Peoria and about 40 people came to a three-week series in Bloomington, according to Brad Colvis, associate director of the diocesan Office of Evangelization.
Theology on Tap is a young adult ministry of RENEW International, which promotes it in partnership with the Office of Young Adult Ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago, where the program was initiated in June 1981.
The program aims at reaching young Catholics where they are by presenting discussions on topics of Catholic doctrine and theology at informal settings such as pubs, bars and restaurants. It is specially designed for young adults and their friends, both married and single in their 20s and 30s.
“It’s a relaxed setting in an inviting context, where people can really participate as much as they feel led to,” said Colvis.
“Religious Life: Alive Today!” is the title of the Feb. 10 talk, presented by Sister Juana Maria Sanchez, SCTJM. On Feb. 17, Craig and Amy Dyke will talk about “Marriage and the Gift of Life.” The final talk in the series on Feb. 24 will be “Gifts of the Eastern Catholic Churches,” presented by John Evancho and Steve Mattern.
