Three New Priests Ordained to the Priesthood

In a joyful celebration of faith and vocation, the Diocese of Peoria welcomed three new priests through the Sacrament of Holy Orders to the sacred ministry of the priesthood. On Saturday, May 24, 2025, Bishop Louis Tylka ordained Fathers Ben Schoonmaker, Francis Strong, and Jack Watt in a beautiful Mass filled with reverence, gratitude, and hope for the future of the Church.

These men, called by God and formed through years of seminary formation and prayer, begin their priestly ministry with hearts set on service to God and His people. Each new priest celebrated his first Mass the following day at his home parish.

Ordinands declare before the people their resolve to undertake the office of the priesthood.

Father Ben Schoonmaker offered his first Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rock Island, surrounded by family, friends, and faithful who have supported him throughout his journey. He has been assigned to serve as parochial vicar at Most Holy Eucharist Parish in Bloomington.

Father Francis Strong celebrated his first Mass at St. Andrew Parish in Fairbury, where his vocation was nurtured and encouraged. He now begins his ministry at St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Streator.

Father Jack Watt, known for his deep compassion and joyful spirit, celebrated his first Mass at Epiphany Catholic Church in Normal. He has been assigned to serve the faithful at nearby St. Jude Parish in Peoria.

Before their ordination, the newly ordained gathered with brother priests from across the diocese for a barbecue celebration—a tradition that reflects the fraternity and support within the diocesan presbyterate. Bishop Tylka also took the opportunity to personally bless each of their chalices, a sacred sign of their new role in offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

The Diocese rejoices at the gift of these new priests and prays for their continued growth in holiness, wisdom, and pastoral charity as they begin this sacred mission. May the Lord who began this good work in them bring it to fulfillment.

Let us continue to pray for vocations and for all priests who serve tirelessly in the vineyard of the Lord.
