Jordan Catholic EarlyAct Club gets in on Santa’s act
ROCK ISLAND – The Jordan Catholic School EarlyAct Club got an early-December jump on Christmas gift giving in support of the less fortunate in their parish communities.
The initiative not only helped spread joy to families but also fostered a sense of compassion and teamwork among the students.” – Katy Saucedo, fifth-grade teacher
After a casual day for a donation towards the Angel Tree raised over $1,700, the student elves went to work.
Accompanied by Mrs. Katy Saucedo, fifth grade teacher, and Mrs. Jenn Heckenkamp, instructional support, as well as other parents and staff, the students spent the latter part of Sunday, Dec. 8 shopping and wrapping.
ROTARY CLUB SPONSOR
Heckenkamp explained that the Jordan Catholic School EarlyAct Club is a youth service organization sponsored by the Rock Island Rotary Club. “This year, we have 28 fifth and sixth graders who meet twice a month before school to plan and carry out projects,” she said.
Added Saucedo, “The students carefully selected items to brighten the holiday season for those in need. Afterward, they gathered together to wrap the gifts, adding personal touches to each package.”
Principal Kelly McLaughlin said she would be contacting all of Jordan Catholic’s affiliated parishes (St. Pius X, Sacred Heart, and St. Mary’s in Rock Island; and St. Ambrose in Milan), to see if they have families/shut-ins in need.
MANY NEEDS ADDRESSED
“Extra money is also going to be used to purchase hats, gloves, and other essentials for Catholic Care packs and Family Resources,” she said.
“The initiative not only helped spread joy to families but also fostered a sense of compassion and teamwork among the students,” said Saucedo.
Observed Heckenkamp, “Our EarlyAct members have done a wonderful job of serving others.”
