Dr. Jerry Sanderson appointed diocesan superintendent of schools

The Most Reverend Louis Tylka, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jerry Sanderson as Superintendent of Schools.

Dr. Sanderson has been serving as interim superintendent since January 31. Since 2001, he held the position of associate superintendent in the Office of Catholic Schools, where he assisted school administrators with Catholic identity, strategic planning, data analysis, school improvement, and professional development.

Jerry Sanderson has 37 years of experience in Catholic schools. He began his career in education at Carroll Catholic School in Lincoln, Illinois in 1987, where he served as a teacher and track coach. He later served as a teacher and athletic director at St. Matthew School in Champaign before assuming the role of principal at St. Anne School in East Moline, which he held from 1994 to 2001.

Bishop Tylka commented, “I am pleased to appoint Dr. Jerry Sanderson as Superintendent of Schools. Throughout his tenure in the Office of Catholic Schools, he has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to the mission of Catholic education and to fostering a faith-filled environment where students can grow in their love for Christ and His Church.

Dr. Sanderson holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in education from the University of Illinois, as well as a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from the same institution. He earned his doctorate in education from Illinois State University.

Dr. Sanderson and his wife, Lisa, are active members of Holy Family Church in Peoria, and the proud parents of four children, all graduates of diocesan schools.

Expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Dr. Sanderson remarked, “I thank Bishop Tylka for the opportunity to lead the Catholic schools of the Peoria Diocese. I am looking forward to working closely with our principals, pastors, teachers, families, and benefactors to further the evangelizing mission of our schools. Together, we can nurture the formation of saints, and build vibrant school communities where Jesus is known, loved, and served.”

Bishop Tylka commended Dr. Sanderson’s deep-rooted connection to the Diocese of Peoria, stating, “Dr. Sanderson is a familiar and highly respected figure within our diocese. His knowledge of our schools and the relationships that he has forged position him to understand the strengths and challenges our schools face both now and in the years ahead. His dedication to Catholic education and his ability to navigate change make him an invaluable asset to the Office of Catholic Schools.”
