Opportunities for study, prayer and retreats announced as Lent begins

Fish fry listings posted, will be updated

With the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, comes a listing of fish dinners being offered around the Diocese of Peoria. Information provided to The Catholic Post can be found in the print edition and will be added to our comprehensive online listing as it becomes available.

The Vigil Project comes to Bartonville

St. Anthony Church, 2525 S. Skyway Road in Bartonville, is hosting two events by The Vigil Project on Friday, March 3. The first is a 90-minute workshop at 2:30 p.m. that is designed to offer spiritual renewal and practical instruction tailored for Catholic musicians.

A Lenten dinner buffet will be provided after the workshop.

At 7 p.m. there will be a True Presence Night, including music, “dynamic speaking” and eucharistic adoration in the church. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and child care is available by contacting Sara Woiwode at (309) 573-9810 or sara.woiwode@gmail.com.

There is a $10 fee to attend the workshop for musicians. Reservations are requested by Feb. 24 and may be made by contacting Mary Ann Fahey-Darling at (309) 678-9166 or faheyirish19@gmail.com.

Benedictines at Rock Island monastery plan weekly retreat

The Benedictine Sisters of St. Mary Monastery in Rock Island are presenting a four-week study of “Lent — Season of Transformation.” It will be held Tuesdays, Feb. 28 through March 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Gathering Space of St. Paul the Apostle Church, 916 E. Rusholme St. in Davenport, Iowa.

The Little Rock Scripture Study will explore three key moments in the life and ministry of Jesus, enabling participants to “embrace transformation” by repentance, surrender and love.

The retreat leader will be Lorene Knobbe, assistant program director at the Benedictine community’s Benet House Retreat Center.

Heart of Peoria churches hosting adoration, evening prayer

On the six Sundays of Lent, the churches in the Heart of Peoria Catholic Community will have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 4 p.m., followed by silent prayer. There will be Evening Prayer and Benediction at 4:30 p.m. The dates and locations are:

  • Feb. 26: St. Bernard Church, 511 E. Kansas St.
  • March 5: St. Mary’s Cathedral, 607 N.E. Madison Ave.
  • March 12: St. Joseph Church, 107 N. Richard Pryor Place
  • March 19: Sacred Heart Church, 504 Fulton St.

  • April 2: St. Joseph Church
