Sister Ann Regina Hughes, OSF, dies; longtime educator, community treasurer
WEST PEORIA — Visitation and a Mass of Christian Burial are planned for Thursday, July 29, at Immaculate Conception Convent here for Sister Ann Regina Hughes, OSF. Burial will take place on Friday, July 30, in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by the Mass at 7 p.m. Father Dagobert Kabendera will be the celebrant, with Father Martin Mwongyera as the homilist.
Sister Ann Regina died July 23, 2021, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria. She was 81.
The daughter of James and Catherine (McGinley) Hughes, Sister Ann Regina was born Sept. 30, 1939, and given the name Nancy. Her home parish was Sacred Heart in Moline.
She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of the Immaculate Conception, also known as the Heading Avenue Franciscans, on Sept. 8, 1957, and professed vows as a member of the congregation on Aug. 12, 1960. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Bradley University and a master’s degree in accountancy from the University of Notre Dame.
Sister Ann Regina ministered as a teacher at all levels, from preschool through college, and was also a principal. The schools she served include Immaculate Conception Pre-School, Peoria; Immaculate Conception Aspirant School and Novitiate, Peoria; St. Mary School, Metamora; St. Mary School, Canton; Sacred Heart School, Moline; Epiphany School, Normal; and Seton Catholic School, Moline.
In addition, Sister Ann Regina was administrator and worked in resident services at St. Joseph’s Home in Springfield. For the last 30 years, she served her Franciscan community as general treasurer.
Preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Patricia, who died as an infant, and Eileen Magnuson, Sister Ann Regina is survived by her niece Michelle (Doug) Dixon, and nephew, Eric (Wendy) Magnuson, and the Heading Avenue Franciscans.
