In 2014, a British investigative journalist (Valene Kane) uses a fake online identity to pose as a recent, and vulnerable, Muslim convert open to recruitment by ISIS. But her feelings about the surprisingly personable, London-bred terrorist (Shazad Latif) who tries to lure her into joining him in Syria eventually become conflicted.

Director and co-writer Timur Bekmambetov’s intelligent, if flawed, adaptation of Anna Erelle’s memoir “In the Skin of a Jihadist” is told entirely through its protagonist’s computer screen, which helps to build suspense as she struggles to conceal her real-life relationships with her boyfriend (Morgan Watkins) and editor (Christine Adams) from the dangerous killer she’s trying to dupe. Yet the degree to which she falls under her adversary’s sway ultimately seems far-fetched.

Discreetly portrayed but potentially disturbing violence, a cohabitation theme, at least one use of profanity and a milder oath, considerable rough language, a handful of crude terms. The Catholic News Service classification is A-III — adults. The Motion Picture Association rating is R — restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.
