‘Spirituality of Cancer’ topic for couple, priest April 30 at St. Paul Church, Macomb

Bill and Jean Maakestad will talk about how they coped spiritually with Jean's cancer and how it has shaped their marriage.

MACOMB — “Spirituality of Cancer: How One Couple Copes” is the focus for a presentation planned for Monday, April 30, at St. Paul Church, 309 W. Jackson St.

Married in 1994, Jean and Bill Maakestad will talk about how they coped with Jean’s cancer. She was diagnosed with two unrelated cancers in 1993 and 1996 and they often share with groups their spirituality of cancer and how it has shaped their marriage.

Joining them will be Father Mike Schaab, a senior priest of the Diocese of Peoria, who helped the Maakestads on their spiritual journey with cancer.

The evening will begin with Mass at 5:15 p.m. A light meal in the gathering space and the presentation will follow. A free-will offering will be accepted.
