“Collide” (Open Road)

By Catholic News Service

Steal something, speed, crash, repeat. This action film features so much demolition derby, it becomes somewhat more entertaining, just on the basis of sheer volume, to focus on that rather than the thin drug-smuggling plot.

A young American (Nicholas Hoult) living in Germany returns to a career of crime in order to pocket enough money for his girlfriend (Felicity Jones) to have a kidney transplant. While director and co-writer Eran Creevey does take a tongue-in-cheek approach to the proceedings, the adoption of immoral means to achieve a good end plays out amid characters and dilemmas that prove less than compelling.

Gun and physical violence, fleeting rough language. The Catholic News Service classification is A-III — adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG-13 — parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
