Funeral for Sister Martina Brinkschroeder, OSB, is Oct. 12

ROCK ISLAND — Sister Martina Brinkschroeder, OSB, died on Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, at St. Mary Monastery. She was 94 and in her 74th year of profession as a member of the Sisters of St. Benedict.

Visitation is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., in the chapel of St. Mary Monastery, 2200 88th Avenue West. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. in the monastery chapel. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island.

Born in Fort Madison, Iowa, on March 2, 1922, Sister Martina was the daughter of George and Dorothea (Pietz) Brinkschroeder. She entered the Benedictine community at St. Mary Monastery in Nauvoo on Sept. 8, 1940, professing first vows in July 1942 and final vows on Aug. 22, 1945.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.

Sister Martina devoted her ministry to education in Illinois and Indiana. In the Diocese of Peoria, she served as a teacher at St. Boniface School and Holy Family School in Peoria, Immaculate Conception School in Monmouth, Sts. Peter and Paul School in Nauvoo, and St. Mary School in Wenona. She also taught at St. Columba School in Chicago, and at St. Thomas More School in Munster, Indiana.

She was the librarian at St. Mary Monastery in Nauvoo and Rock Island from 1994 to 2008.

Sister Martina was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Martin Brinkschroeder; and a sister, Rose Rickleman. She is survived by several nephews and her Benedictine Sisters.
