Saint Thomas More girls capture Class 2A state basketball title

The High School of Saint Thomas More in Champaign won the Illinois High School Association Class 2A girls basketball state championship in convincing fashion with a 70-34 title game triumph over Prophetstown Saturday night at Redbird Arena in Normal.

The Sabers, finishing their historic season with a record of 33-2, had advanced to the championship game by defeating Teutopolis 63-43 in a semifinal game on Friday.

Prophetstown came into the title game with a record of 31-2, but St. Thomas More raced to a 46-16 halftime advantage.

Four Sabers scored in double figures, including Alexa Wallen (18), Tori McCoy (17), Elizabeth Bristow (13), and Randa Harshbarger (12)

The Sabers, coached by Chris Menning, will be honored at an all-school assembly in Champaign on Tuesday afternoon. The Catholic Post will publish a souvenir section of photos and team information in its March 16 issue.
