Organist Scott Montgomery in concert at cathedral Feb. 2

Prize-winning organist and recording artist Scott Montgomery will perform next Sunday, Feb. 2, on the famed 1937 Wicks organ at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 607 N.E. Madison Ave., in Peoria. The concert will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Among the works he will play are Franck’s “Final” and Paine’s “Variations on an Austrian Hymn.”

Montgomery, who has been the organist at Holy Cross in Champaign since 1995 and director of music there since 2005, won the Lilian Murtagh Memorial Award (first prize) and the Audience Prize of the 2006 American Guild of Organists’ National Young Artist Competition in Organ Playing. He was the first person to win both prizes in the history of the competition.

He has performed for conventions of the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society, and maintains an active concert schedule across the country.

Montgomery’s recordings include “Water and Light” (Pro Organo Label), “Inspirations from England” (Regent Records), and “Organo Plano, Music for a Joyous Occasion” (Raven CDs).
