To the Priests, Deacons, Chaplains and Religious Communities of the Diocese of Peoria:

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

This year, it looks as if the “flu season” will be particularly virulent. After consultation with the medical authorities, I therefore think it will be prudent to recommend the following temporary liturgical procedures:

— I strongly suggest that in the coming weeks, the Faithful be encouraged to receive Communion in the hand rather than upon the tongue. Those who insist upon receiving on the tongue should be reminded to open their mouths widely and to extend their tongue as far as possible;

— The distribution of the Precious Blood to the Faithful at Holy Communion should be suspended until further notice;

— Pastors should take every precaution to guarantee that all ministers of Holy Communion wash their hands before and after every Mass, and that all the Sacred Vessels be properly sanitized after ritual purification;

— Please remind your people that anyone who is feeling ill should avoid infecting their neighbor. Those who are suffering flu like symptoms are urged to see their doctor, avoid public functions, and are, of course, dispensed from their Sunday Mass obligation.

While avoiding any semblance of panic, all those who minister especially to the young, the aged, or the infirmed should pay careful attention as this medical situation develops. Threats to one’s health are no more dangerous during Divine Worship than any other of our daily social occasions. The medical community suggests that frequent hand washing provides perhaps the best protection against infection throughout the day.

If you have any related questions, please contact the Office of Divine Worship at 309-671-1550.

May God bless and protect all those who are ill, especially those in hospitals and nursing homes.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Rev. Daniel R. Jenky, CSC
Bishop of Peoria
