58 will receive papal, diocesan honors during Mass on Nov. 18

A special anniversary year for Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, will culminate Nov. 18 when he bestows papal and diocesan honors on 58 “heroes” of the church from throughout the Diocese of Peoria.

Bishop Jenky — who marked his 10th year as Bishop of Peoria on April 10 and will have been a bishop for 15 years on Dec. 15 — will be principal celebrant and homilist at a 3:30 p.m. Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral that will include the Conferral of Ecclesiastical Honors.

The Mass and reception that follow also are a key part of the diocese’s celebration of the Year of Faith, which opened Oct. 11.

“We’re honoring people that really exemplify what it means to faithfully live our Christianity in the world,” said Msgr. Stanley Deptula, director of the Office of Divine Worship, in inviting all members of the Diocese of Peoria to attend.

The honorees are listed below. Photos and capsule biographies of each appear in the Oct. 28 print issue of The Catholic Post.

Plans for the 2012 Honors Mass had always called for diocesan honors to be bestowed, and nominations for the Pere Marquette, Archbishop Schlarman, and St. Isidore Rural Family Life awards were sought last March.

However, the diocese learned last week that Pope Benedict XVI also granted papal honors to 10 members of the Diocese of Peoria in time for the celebration. Those recipients will be awarded their medals at the conclusion of Mass as well.

In a letter to Pope Benedict, Bishop Jenky said the papal honorees “are true co-workers in the vineyard of the Lord and have been a great personal support to my own pastoral ministry.”

When Bishop Jenky was honored at a formal gala on June 1, proceeds went to Catholic Charities. Instead of the traditional banquet following this year’s Honors Mass, the hour-long reception will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages and a chance to congratulate the honorees.

Following is a list of the honorees:
