Serving ‘families in poverty’ focus Sept. 29 at Peoria parish
Families in Poverty’s Grip: The Causes, Consequences, and Potential Cures for Poverty in Our Community is the theme for a seminar planned for Saturday, Sept. 29, at St. Jude’s Church, 10811 N. Knoxville, in Peoria.
Sponsored by Leaven, a social justice outreach at St. Jude’s, the day begins at 8 a.m. and will close at 4 p.m. Lunch will be served at noon.
The seminar will include a multimedia presentation led by Gary Burlington and B.J. Leonard. Burlington is a former St. Jude’s parishioner who was a missionary to Africa and a professor of intercultural studies at Lincoln Christian University, while Leonard is outreach minister at First Christian Church of Decatur.
In addition to offering background on what has caused the rise in the numbers of families who are vulnerable to poverty, the speakers hope to foster development of local, church-based ministries that effectively serve these families.
The cost for lunch is $8 and payment may be made upon arrival. To register for the seminar, contact Donna by email at donna.cokel@stjudechurchpeoria.org or by phone at (309) 243-7811.
