Services in Rock Island for Benedictine Sister Germaine Cupp

ROCK ISLAND — Sister Germaine Cupp, OSB, a longtime teacher, principal and pastoral associate in central Illinois, has died. She was 83.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Friday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of St. Mary Monastery here. Burial took place in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island.

Sister Germaine died on Sept. 3, 2012, at St. Mary Monastery. She had been a member of the Benedictine community for more than 60 years.

Born in Burlington, Iowa, on May 8, 1929, Sister Germaine was the daughter of Willis and Marie (Jordan) Cupp. She attended grade school and high school at St. Mary’s in Moline, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, and a master’s degree in administration from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa.

Sister Germaine entered the Sisters of St. Benedict on Aug. 15, 1948, and made her first profession of vows on June 24, 1950.

In the Diocese of Peoria, she taught at St. John’s in Bradford (1955-56), St. Roch’s in LaSalle (1956-57), St. Mary’s in Wenona (1957-58 and 1964-65), and St. Mary’s Academy in Nauvoo (1963-64). In addition, Sister Germaine taught at schools in Chicago and Munster, Ind.

She was a principal at St. John’s in Clinton (1965-67), St. Boniface in Peoria (1967-69), St. Mary’s in Moline (1969-76), Seton Catholic in Moline (1976-80), Holy Family in Peoria (1980-82), and St. Joseph’s in Pekin (1982-88).

Sister Germaine served as a pastoral associate at St. Mary’s in Moline, and St. Joseph’s and St. Pius X in Rock Island, and was a board member for St. Joseph the Worker House and the St. Joseph Evening Meal program. She also worked in the monastery kitchen for several years.

Preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, James, Paul and Eugene; and a sister, Jean, Sister Germaine is survived by three sisters, Kathleen Johnson, Mary Castrey and Fran Wolf; her nieces and nephews; and her Benedictine Sisters.
