Two Rock Island parishes hosting mission Sept. 10-14

ROCK ISLAND — Nationally known author and preacher Father Tom Allender, SJ, will be homilist at all Masses at Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s parishes here the weekend of Sept. 10 and 11 in conjunction with a parish mission that continues the next three nights.

“The Fruits of the Holy Spirit: A Spiritual Inventory” is the theme for the mission, conducted jointly by the parishes.

Ordained a Jesuit priest in 1971, Father Allender has taught at both the high school and college level as well as conducted more than 900 parish missions under the general theme of “Life’s Journey.” His recent book, “God Loves and Unmade Bed,” helps educate that God loves us unconditionally.

Mass times on Saturday, Sept. 10, are 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s, 2208 4th Ave., and 5:15 p.m. at Sacred Heart, 2810 5th Ave. On Sunday, Masses are at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart and 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s.

As the mission continues, Sacred Heart will host 6:30 p.m. Mass and a 7 p.m. talk on Monday and Wednesday, while St. Mary’s will host Tuesday evening’s activities at the same times. The public is invited to all aspects of the parish mission.
