Santo Nino de Cebu events set at Peoria parishes this month

The 13th anniversary celebration of the enthronement of the Santo Nino de Cebu at St. Joseph’s Church in Peoria is planned for Saturday, July 23. It will be held in the church and parish hall at 103 Richard Pryor Place.

The observance will begin with a Mass at 5:30 p.m. and include a blessing of all icons of the Santo Nino de Cebu and the infant Jesus. A procession of the Blessed Sacrament and the icons will take place after Mass and end with Benediction.

A Filipino potluck reception will follow in the parish hall.

The Filipino-American community will prepare for the celebration with a novena from July 14 to 23 in the Father Clair Bourdereaux, OFM Hall at Sacred Heart Church, 504 Fulton St., Peoria. All are welcome to gather for prayer at 6 p.m. each day.

Veneration of the Infant Jesus of Cebu dates back to the Christianization of the Philippines. Organizers of the Santo Nino celebration in Peoria said many Filipinos around the world have their own statues at home. Tradition calls for it to face the front door to greet those who come to visit.
