World Youth Day was instituted by Pope John Paul II in 1985, with the first one held in 1986 in Rome. The international gatherings are generally held every two or three years.

More than one million people are expected to attend this summer. The itinerary includes Mass, catecheses, music festivals and an audience with Pope Benedict XVI. The theme is “Rooted and Built Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith.”
