Women invited to Nauvoo March 26 for reflection, tours

NAUVOO — Sts. Peter and Paul Church will host a day of recollection sponsored by the Diocese of Peoria Council of Catholic Women on Saturday, March 26.

The speaker for the day, which begins with registration and refreshments at 9 a.m., is Father Tony Trosley, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul and all the parishes in Hancock County. He is also administrator of St. Patrick’s in Raritan.

The theme is “A Celebration of the Catholic Priesthood” and will focus on the link between the priesthood and “every member of Christ’s body, the church,” Father Trosley said.

“In generations past, so many distinctions between man and woman, priestly and lay ministry, old church and new church, and the varying priorities arising from each have clouded the simple fact that all members of the body of Christ, the church, should see Christ — and should see themselves — in the Catholic priesthood,” he explained.

Father Trosley noted that when Jesus speaks about the dynamic of total love, submission, obedience and sacrifice, he is doing so from his perspective as the second person of the Holy Trinity. Not only do the three divine persons of the Trinity practice what Jesus describes, they eternally live it.

“The mutual abiding, indwelling, communion to which Jesus calls us should find their focal point in the priesthood, as reflective and informative of the entire church,” Father Trosley said. “We will look at how priests have done it in our nation’s history, and in the history of the Catholic Church in Hancock County.”

The schedule includes Benediction at 10 a.m. with a talk about “How the Eternal Priest Prepares Us to Prepare for Him”; a tour to the graves of Fathers Henry Reimbold and Leonard Tholen at 11 a.m. and a look at “The Relationship Between the Priesthood and the Hidden Way”; and lunch at the Nauvoo Hotel. In the afternoon there will be a rosary at 1 p.m. with a reflection on Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus, and Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, a native of the Diocese of Peoria who is being considered for sainthood; and an open forum at 2 p.m. to discuss the present and the future of the Catholic Church in Hancock County, followed by a trip to the Nauvoo Visitor Center.

A Mass is planned for 4 p.m. and will satisfy the Sunday obligation.

The cost for the day of recollection is $18. To make a reservation, call Sts. Peter and Paul Church at (217) 453-2428, or Mary Anna Meyer of the DCCW at (309) 691-3874.
