Sr. Theresa Ann, Champaign native and TEC pioneer, dies
SINSINAWA, Wis. — A funeral Mass was celebrated on Feb. 10 in Queen of the Rosary Chapel here for Sister Theresa Ann (Augustino) Palmisano, OP, who ministered in Champaign, Urbana and Peoria for 13 years. Burial followed in the motherhouse cemetery.
Sister Theresa Ann died on Feb. 5, 2011, at the Dominican motherhouse in Sinsinawa. She was 77.
Born in Champaign on Nov. 21, 1933, Sister Theresa Ann was the daughter of John and Augusta (Gentille) Palmisano. She made her first profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican on Aug. 5, 1955, and her final profession on Aug. 5, 1958.
Her varied ministries took her to Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Oklahoma. In the Diocese of Peoria, Sister Theresa Ann was a teacher at Holy Cross School in Champaign from 1970 to 1975, and St. Mark’s School in Peoria from 1979 to 1982.
She also served as a spiritual director for Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) at the International House of Prayer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1973 to 1977, and as a family caregiver in Urbana from 1998 to 1999.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Charles Palmisano, John Palmisano and Michael Palmisano. Surviving are two sisters, Rosemary Spradley and Sister Catherine Rita (Thomasina) Palmisano, OP; a brother, Francis Palmisano; nieces and nephews; and her Dominican Sisters, with whom she shared life for 55 years.
