Sr. Maureen Coughlin, OSB, Peoria native, dies at 92

ROCK ISLAND — Sister Maureen (Mary Katherine) Coughlin, OSB, a longtime educator who served at schools around the Diocese of Peoria, died on April 18, 2010, at St. Mary Monastery here. She was 92.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 21 at the St. Mary Monastery Chapel. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island.

Born in Peoria on April 24, 1917, Sister Maureen was the daughter of Thomas J. Coughlin Sr. and Katherine O’Brien Coughlin. She was a graduate of St. Mark’s School and Academy of Our Lady, both in Peoria.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and liberal arts from Bradley University in Peoria, and did further study at Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colo., and St. Joseph’s College in Hartford, Conn.

Sister Maureen entered the Sisters of St. Benedict on Sept. 15, 1944, in Nauvoo. She made her first profession on Dec. 27, 1946, and her final profession on Dec. 28, 1949.

For 41 years, she taught at Washington School in Peoria, Sts. Peter and Paul in Nauvoo, St. Roch’s in LaSalle, St. Anthony’s in Atkinson, St. Mary’s in Moline, St. Boniface in Peoria, St. John the Baptist in Clinton, and Holy Family in Peoria. Sister Maureen also ministered as a religious educator in Ladd, served as a librarian at Holy Family in Peoria, and was a tape librarian at St. Mary’s Academy and St. Mary Monastery in Nauvoo.

Preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Father Thomas J. Coughlin Jr., she is survived by her Benedictine Sisters.
