Women’s role in Year for Priests is convention focus on Oct. 24
DEVELOPING A theme for the annual convention of the Peoria Diocese Council of Catholic Women came very easily after a conversation with Father Don Roszkowski, pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in Metamora.
Joan Weber, DCCW president, said he talked to the organization’s board about “Vianney,” a one-man show by Leonardo Defilippis that will be coming to central Illinois next February and it sparked some reflection among the members about how they could address the Year for Priests.
“It was almost spontaneous after we heard Father Don speak,” Weber said.
As a result, this year’s convention will focus on “A Woman’s Role in the Year for Priests.” Planned for Saturday, Oct. 24, it will begin with a rosary at 8:30 a.m. and Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Peoria.
The convention sessions and a luncheon will follow at the Spalding Pastoral Center, 419 N.E. Madison Ave.
Fathre Roszkowski is among the speakers, and convention participants will also hear from Msgr. Jason Gray, administrator of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Peoria and judicial vicar in the diocesan Tribunal Office. The title of his talk, based on Acts 1:14, is “The Disciples Devoted Themselves to Prayer Together with the Women and Mary, the Mother of Jesus.”
“The Wonder and Glory of Women’s Health” will be addressed by Dr. Jeanne Smith, a natural family planning medical consultant in Peoria.
The day also includes updates by the DCCW’s committee chairs and comments by Msgr. Dale Wellman, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Moline and longtime DCCW spiritual moderator. In addition, province director Rebecca Woodhull will tell the women about what’s happening at the National Council of Catholic Women.
“This is open to all women whether they are members of their parish women’s organization or the DCCW or not,” Weber said. “All women who work, encourage and are involved in any way in their parish — including those who may only attend Mass — are welcome.”
The cost to attend “A Woman’s Role in the Year for Priests” is $18 per person before Oct. 1 and $21 after that date. Reservations will be accepted until Monday, Oct. 19.
Checks may be sent to Nympha White, DCCW treasurer, at 660 Myrtle Ave., Grand Ridge, IL 61325.
