Sr. Magdalene Schmitt, OSF, dies; taught in Streator for 33 years
JOLIET — A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, July 9, at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home here for Sister M. Magdalene Schmitt, OSF, who taught at St. Stephen’s School in Streator for 33 years. She was 80.
Sister Magdalene died on July 6, 2009, at Queen of Angels. She was buried on Friday, July 10, in Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville.
Born in Leonore on Sept. 26, 1928, Elizabeth Marie Schmitt was the daughter of Albert and Frances (Frings) Schmitt.
She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate on Sept. 4, 1945, and received the name Sister Mary Magdalene. She professed temporary vows on Aug. 12, 1948, and final vows on Aug. 12, 1951.
Sister Magdalene devoted 54 years to education, with her longest service at St. Stephen’s School in Streator, where she taught first and second grades from 1969 until she moved to Our Lady of Angels in Joliet in 2002.
Sister Magdalene was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by a brother, Eugene Schmitt of Albuquerque, N.M., and several nieces and nephews.
