Emotions, memories to blend with prayer
Emotions and memories will mix with prayer this weekend at the final regularly scheduled Masses at five churches where services are being suspended.
Members of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Spring Valley have an additional reason to keenly feel a blend of gratitude for blessings past and anticipation of future changes. The 11 a.m. Sunday Mass on June 14 will also mark the 100th anniversary of the completion of their church building.
The decision to suspend Masses at the four parishes and one mission pending further study of the needs of the Illinois Valley and Quad Cities areas was announced May 21.
While regular Masses have been suspended, the parishes and mission are not being closed, and their churches may still host weddings and funerals and important church celebrations.
In addition to Sts. Peter and Paul, the faith communities include St. Mary’s, East Moline; St. Benedict’s, Ladd; St. Thomas More, Dalzell; and St. Gertrude Mission, Seatonville.
Sts. Peter and Paul Parish was organized in 1891 for Polish and Lithuanian Catholics. The present church was completed in 1909. The logo printed here was designed to commemorate the centennial.
