Three to receive habits, two will profess vows

PRINCEVILLE — Pentecost Sunday this weekend will bring even greater joy than usual to the Congregation of St. John as three men receive their habits and two others profess simple vows.

On the Vigil of Pentecost, May 30, at 6 p.m., habits will be given to Brother Gilbert Carrasco, 40, from Puerto Rico; Brother Daniel Hertzner, 25, from St. Columba’s Parish, Ottawa; and Brother Charlie Vera, 23, from Laredo, Texas. In the ceremony, Brother Gilbert, Brother Daniel and Brother Charlie will be given new religious names.

At the 11:15 a.m. Mass on Pentecost, May 31, Brother John Jacob Hansen, 32, from Escanaba, Mich., and Brother Cornelius Adriano, 27, from Indonesia, will profess vows. Father Joseph Mary Brown, CSJ, prior and novice master, will receive their vows.

The rites on both days will take place in the chapel of St. Joseph Priory, 11223 W. Legion Hall Road, rural Princeville.

The reception of habits comes halfway through the two-year period of the novitiate. Profession of simple vows comes at the conclusion of the novitiate and commences a discernment period of at least four years, after which Brothers of St. John may profess perpetual vows if they have been accepted by the community, according to Father Joseph Mary.
