Sr. Mary Jean Feeney, OSB, Ivesdale native and longtime teacher, dies at 98

ROCK ISLAND — A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Sister Mary Jean Feeney, OSB, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 29, in the chapel of St. Mary Monastery. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island.

Visitation is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, at the monastery, where a Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m.

Sister Mary Jean died on March 25, 2017, at UnityPoint Health-Trinity, Rock Island. She was 98.

Born in Ivesdale on May 19, 1918, Sister Mary Jean was the daughter of John and Mary Ellen (Clifford) Feeney. She attended St. Joseph School in Ivesdale and St. Mary’s Academy in Nauvoo, and continued her education at St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana.

She entered the Benedictine community on Sept 16, 1937, and professed first vows on June 26, 1939, and final vows on July 27, 1942.

Her ministry included teaching at St. Anthony in Atkinson, Immaculate Conception in Monmouth, St. Mary Academy in Nauvoo, where she was also the treasurer, and St. Thomas More in Munster, Indiana, where she also served as bookkeeper. After retiring to the St. Mary Monastery in Rock Island in 2007, she helped with retreat ministry at Benet House Retreat Center for five years.

Sister Mary Jean was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Joseph and Father William Feeney. She is survived by two sisters, Eileen Feeney and Sister Bernadine Feeney, SL; a niece and several nephews; and her Benedictine Sisters.
